The Painted Hills: A History of Art in Bosque County

by George W. Larson, Ph.D.

The Painted Hills. The book relates the story of how art developed into a major cultural influence in Bosque County. It begins with a discussion of how the county’s unique cultural and ethnic heritage laid the foundation for the visual arts in the county. Many people are not aware that several Bosque artists in the 1900’s received regional and national recognition. The work and promotion of Joan Spieler, Melvin Warren and James Boren began the current art scene and their influence led to the development of several local artists including Martin Grelle and Nancy Boren. Twenty current local Bosque Artists and their art work are presented in the book and illustrate how this legacy has continued. The book concludes with a discussion of how this art movement has been incorporated into the everyday lives of Bosque citizens. The book is printed in an enlarged format and contains approximately 200 illustrations and photographs.
